The Ugly Duckling Bathroom Reno

From Ugly Duckling to Beautiful Swan: An Ensuite Bathroom Transformation

We’ve all seen them: bathrooms trapped in another decade, suffering from peeling drywall, outdated fixtures, and layouts that just don’t make sense. Here at West K Home Works, we affectionately call these our “ugly duckling” projects. They might not look like much at first glance, but with the right vision and a lot of hard work, they possess incredible potential.

Recently, we tackled an ensuite remodel that perfectly fits the bill. Here is a look behind the scenes at how we transformed a cramped, tired space into a modern, waterproofed sanctuary.

1. Assessing the Damage and Prepping the Canvas

Every great remodel starts behind the walls. Before we even thought about aesthetics, we had to address the bones of the room. This ugly duckling had its share of issues, requiring some initial ceiling and drywall repair to ensure we were working with a perfectly plumb and structurally sound canvas.

We never cover up a problem. A thorough plumbing inspection is always step one once the walls are open, ensuring everything is up to code and ready to handle modern fixtures before we close it back up.

2. Bulletproof Waterproofing

A beautiful bathroom is useless if it leaks. The secret to a shower that lasts a lifetime isn’t what’s on the surface—it’s what is underneath.

For this project, we relied on professional-grade materials to guarantee a watertight seal. We built out a custom shower using a Schluter-Kerdi shower pan and completely waterproofed the surround. To maximize storage without sacrificing space, we framed out a custom recessed shower niche, making sure to meticulously seal the seams with Kerdi-Band and Kerdi-Board.

3. The Art of Custom Tiling

Once the foundation was bulletproof, it was time for the fun part: bringing the “swan” to life.

For the shower walls, we installed stunning 12×24 Carrara Nevoso polished porcelain tiles. The large format and polished finish immediately elevated the space, giving it a bright, luxurious feel. To provide the perfect contrast and essential slip-resistance underfoot, we laid a classic 6mm ceramic hexagon mosaic tile for the shower pan.

To bridge the gap between the classic mosaics and the modern porcelain walls, we incorporated sleek Fuzion quartz thresholds on the niche and curbs, giving the entire space a polished, custom-built look that standard fiberglass inserts simply can’t match.

4. The Finishing Touches: A Spa-Like Atmosphere

Tile is only half the visual story. To complement the cool elegance of the Carrara porcelain, the drywall was finished in a soothing, two-tone light baby blue paint. The subtle color separation brings a calming, airy atmosphere to the room, officially erasing any memory of the cramped, tired space that existed before.

The Final Reveal

The transformation from a dated, damaged room to a pristine, custom ensuite is always the best part of the job. The new space is not only beautiful but built with the right materials and techniques to ensure it stays that way for decades.

An ugly duckling bathroom doesn’t have to stay that way. Sometimes, it just needs a little vision, some expert drywalling, and a master tile job to finally take flight.
